Burton Cotton Gin Festival 2013

Burton, Texas Cotton Gin Festival 2013

It was a beautiful Spring day in Burton Texas, new leaves on the trees and green grass, the temperature was in the low 70’s. There were plenty of vendors along with Natural Texas. Lots of good stuff to eat, a tractor pull, a cotton gin in operation, and a cotton gin museum. There was the usual German polka band, with beer and dancing. Everyone had a great time.

The people were from all over--from California and Minnesota as well as Central Texas. They all had questions concerning their brush and small trees on their property. They had limited visibility and accessibility to get familiar with their property. Everyone one wanted a trail to go see and show friends and family their place. Usually they wanted to make the land better for wildlife by providing food and shelter. Some were interested in deer and others were interested in birds. What they all had in common was the need to manage their land for wildlife and for their land use preference.

Natural Texas uses a forestry mower to mulch brush and small trees where they stand. The mulch provides the benefits of retaining moisture during drought, shading soil from the hot Texas sun, and eventually decomposing into beneficial nutrients for the remaining plants and grasses. This method of land clearing is much better than dozers and enables Natural Texas to restore Texas land naturally.

Everyone that came by had their special need…locate where a house was to be built…fence line cleared…ATV trails and vistas.  Lots of questions were answered.  I met some wonderful people who we will be working with next week.  We will be helping correct an erosion problem and thinning out brush and trees from under large trees growing in a former creek.
